We're in business! Everything should be functional, though you'll notice that a lot of data is missing. Apparently my backup script got turned off when hostrocket screwed us up on Sept 16th. As a result, the latest database backup I've got is from the 17th. Missing data aside, everything is working again, and we're on a new host. We shouldn't have any more trouble with hackers. All the passwords have been changed to 15+ characters with lots of symbols and numbers. All database names moved around. Config files have been obscured, and everything is read-only currently. In short, our website is currently an impregnible fortress. After hostrocket finally recovers from their little accident, I will pull the latest info from the old database and bring it in to here. Anything you say on the forums between now and then will probably be wiped out. Time of original notification: 21:45 CST. Time of new website on new host: 05:14 CST. 7 1/2 hours is damn good. |

So, as you probably noticed, the website has been down all of Sunday and into the wee hours of Monday also. I'm really upset with our web host right now, especially the way they handled the whole situation. I sent in two trouble tickets detailing the problems we had, one Sunday morning at 2am CST when I first discovered the problem, and another Sunday around lunch at 11:45 CST. Both were ignored. In addition, their forums were mysteriously offline for large portions of the day. It wasn't until I physically called their tech support line and asked what was going on that I got anywhere, and even then it took them another 2 hours to fix it.
I'll be looking for a new host in the coming weeks, so if you know of a good reputable company with reasonable rates, feel free to send me a pm or email. I'm willing to pay a little extra above "cheap" to get good service, which I thought I was getting before.
For those of you interested in what happened, our web host (hostrocket.com) has been having problems with break-ins over the past six months. Hackers have gained access to several of their web servers and have gone to town on many people's accounts, modifying files from the inside. The tech support guy (Don, a very helpful individual) informed me that Sunday after midnight they did server upgrades on all their shared host servers to plug the security holes that the hackers were exploiting.
On our particular server, something screwed up, and they lost an important config file that defined where some of the websites were on the hard drive. So, the mayosource.org domain name was pointing to the proper server, but Apache didn't know what to do with it. It defaulted to the stock web site from Apache (seen early in the AM), and then CPanel (seen all day).
What amazes me most is that they knew they fucked it up but didn't fix it promptly. They should have backups of crucial config files such as the one that was lost, and it should take a matter of minutes to recover from backup and restore functionality. The fact that it took them 22 1/2 hours to resolve the situation is unacceptable.
Anyways, I'm getting angry just telling the story, so I'm going to call it a night. We're back up for good, unless hostrocket pulls another dumbass move. |
